SIGNpost : Reducing Junk Mail and Phone Calls

This item is an extract of a SIGNpost article that originally appeared in the Associate Magazine, but is updated with current data, links,  addresses and other contact details.

Are you fed-up with Junk Mail and Phone Calls? If you are, did you know that you could stop a lot of it by registering with the appropriate 'Preference Service'? Through these services you can register that you do not wish to receive direct marketing mail or phone or fax calls.

To remove your (or that of a deceased relative) address and telephone number from reputable direct mail companies, contact the following organisations.

Mailing Preference Service (MPS)
DMA House
70 Margaret Street
London
W1W 8SS
Tel:020 7291 3310
www.mpsonline.org.uk

Telephone Preference Services (TPS)
(address as above)
Tel: 020 7291 3320
www.tpsonline.org.uk

You can also remove fax numbers at:
Fax Preference Service (FPS)
(address as above)
Tel: 020 7291 3330
www.fpsonline.org.uk

These are industry-supported initiatives, but be aware that it can still take up to 3 months to stop the majority of direct mail, phone calls and faxes. Also, not all junk mail comes from reputable companies, so you may well continue to receive some unwanted mail. If junk mail persists, contact the appropriate preference service to establish if the sender supports the service, and if so report their failure.

On 11th December 2003 the EU Privacy and Electronics Communication Directive came into force making it an offence for companies in the UK to send junk email unless the recipient is an existing customer or has given their permission to receive such material. Firms that do not comply could face a £5,000 fine for each breach.

Additionally there is a global service there is a global service provided by the Direct Marketing Association in the US which people can register their email address with:

www.dmaconsumers.org/emps.html  or, you can access a link through: www.dma.org.uk/content/home.asp  (top right panel "DMA for Consumers")
