North East Associates
Annual Christmas Lunch
- Thursday 8th December -
Definitely our last meeting of the year, and again the weather was creating havoc in the area.
Last year it was snow and today squally showers in the morning and the threat later for gale-force winds with destructive gusting resulted in a few last-minute cancellations, especially from people living out in the wooly wilds of Northumberland and Co. Durham.
Despite the all this about 280 Associates braved the conditions to gather together for a seasonal lunch in the Assembly Rooms in Newcastle upon Tyne.
On arrival a warming glass of mulled wine was offered, alternatives were available, and at the check-in desk name labels were distributed to help our failing memories.

On being greeted by our chairman, John Scott, guests were directed to the sales desk to buy their tickets for this year's raffle and from there ushered into the lounge to relieve congestion.

A few words from John and then feeding followed, with a turkey lunch and Christmas pudding for most, all being served very efficiently with good humour - when don't Associates talk to all the folks around them!

The coffee course brought the raffle, hosted by John with his beautiful assistant Alice, and nine lucky folks received a couple of bottles of wine to take home.

Just prior to this the oldest lady and gent were
presented with a bottle of champagne each.
Irene Gilhooly and Dennis Parrack were warmly applauded.

Some forethought at a time of previous adversity provided more prizes than usual.
This year's chosen charity, local St. Oswald's Hospice, benefited to the tune of a whopping £780 - thanks to the generosity of those present.
Lots more talking
followed,
some at the bar,
and we were joined by the
"Associates' Wives"
after their
Italian-style
lunch at a
restaurant nearby. |

When we left the wind had come, yes that as forecast by the weatherman!
Some went straight home, others did some Christmas shopping in "The Toon" and some took advantage of the hospitality in The Mile Castle very close by.
Once again a successful get-together which for many is the highlight of the Associate year.
