Satisfying the appetites of
North East Associates

- May - June - July -

The last month of spring is surprisingly nice,
May 11th is sunny, warm but windy
- well you can't have everything.

On a very pleasant day what better
than a run into the countryside for lunch.

We are visiting the Lion & Lamb at Horsley,
the next village west after Heddon-on-the-Wall
on the old A69.

The last visit to this pub was 2007 and with it changing hands expectations were high.  The quality of the food has remained high, the beer was good and the service first rate.

Although the menu had been reduced all twenty-seven munchers managed to get something they liked.

I had liver with bacon and onions on a bed of creamed potato mixed with cabbage
- it does have some Irish name which I have forgotten.

Others had
whale & chips
(cod really),
lasagne,
gammon steak,
various pie dishes
and salads.

With a good range
of cask ales
we will not
hesitate to return in the future.

Flaming June, sunny, warm you've guessed it, windy.  Week two the 9th and we are visiting a new venue.  The Black Horse, Beamish was recommended by the evening paper having been awarded national best pub food for 2010.

It's easy to understand why the Black Horse gained its award, the quality of the food was outstanding.  I chose poached halibut on a bed of leeks it wasn't a large portion but the flavours were exquisite.

There were chicken, pasta, pie, grills fish & chips and various salads all tempting the pallet.  Although the main dishes were medium sized, the lunch deal was two courses for £9.95 with main plus starter or sweet.

Starters were black pudding salad, shell-on prawns, pate and others.
Sweets were apple crumble, tiramisu, gateaux, ice-cream and cheesecakes.
The staff were very helpful so all-in-all the deal was very good.

The drinks however were a bone of contention.  A pint of beer was £3.20 which I feel was over-priced as did everyone else.

Only 20 people ventured out which makes me feel this pub was probably too far from Newcastle.

Here we are in the second month of summer this is the third month in a row where the weather is warm and sunny.

The 19th of July
sees us at
another new venue,
The Robin Hood
at Murton Village,
in North Tyneside
and next to New York
- we visit the best places -
a lovely hamlet
close to the sea.

This pub was again recommended by the evening paper, not because it won an award but because of it's down to earth home cooking.  This is exactly what we got, no frills home cooked dishes at £7.00 for two with dessert for an extra £1.00.  How do they do it?

This is by far the cheapest venue we have ever visited.  The food was good but not great, I had steak pie (one quarter of a larger pie) with potatoes and veg.
Other dishes were curry, lasagne, liver & onions, cottage pie and salads - with fish & chips served only on Fridays but we never found out why!

The sweets were arctic roll, ice-cream or Vienetta - ice cream or nothing.
The staff were excellent and every request was attended to.
Most of the 26 lunchers were agreed it was a "rough and ready" establishment but at the prices versus quality it was well worth the visit.

Well, that's it for now, I hope some of you will visit the pubs listed in the future or why not come and join us in our next meeting, you'll be made very welcome.

Regards,  Keith Stokoe
