Winchester & River Itchen Walk
- Wednesday 9th November -
 |
On a fine November morning,
seventeen Associates
gathered by the statue of
Alfred the Great
in Winchester
for a walk along the
River Itchen
to the medieval almshouses
at the Hospital of St. Cross. |
This walk winds along the banks of the River Itchen passing through the playing fields and grounds of Winchester College.

From there it is a short walk to the Hospital of St. Cross and the Almshouses of Noble Poverty, a medieval charity which still provide dwellings for 25 elderly gentlemen known as ‘Brothers’.

The ‘Hospital’ also contains a fine Norman church and many buildings dating from its 12th century origins.

We returned to Winchester via a second branch of the Itchen, passing the entrance to Winchester College and then through one of the original city gates and the grounds of Winchester Cathedral to return to our start point.

From there it was a short walk to the ‘Black Boy’, an old and rather quirky pub, for lunch.
