THE LONDON TRAMPERS AT ALTHORNE - 21st July
Considering the time of year (holidays and so forth), it was a good
turnout. We hit the jackpot again with the weather - we assembled under a
crystal clear sky. Twenty five of us met at the Three Horseshoes Pub, Althorne,
Essex. A small village set on a hill above the River Crouch. After ordering
our meals and giving an approximate return time, nineteen of us set off , six
remained at the pub due to health issues, but still wanting to be part of the
day.Â

This walk is a comfortable
stroll of 3½ miles starting with a long straight downward slope along a
pleasant grassy track towards the river bank. The views of the overall area
from this part of the walk are picturesque.  We then passed through a marina
where the beautiful toys of others are berthed, and the dreams of some of us are
there to be “well, just looked at with envy.

 Taking a
breather before the uphill return.
Now comes the testing bit. We have to go back up a long gradual
incline that seems never ending. Back on level ground we visit the local church
and grounds, then move on back towards the pub for our lunch.
 Waiting for a well-earned drink.
 We took
over the dining room.
Monday being a quiet day for this
particular pub, the landlord and staff were able to give us great service and
attention as we filled the dining area. The food was excellent. During our conversation it was agreed
that this venue and walk was about the best we have done so far.
