Day 2 - Conwy and Llandudno.

Fred and John and spouses.
Today, after a hearty breakfast, we visited Conwy.

Conwy is a classic walled town. Its circuit of walls, over three quarters of a mile long and guarded by no less than 22 towers, is one of the finest in the world. The castle is a gritty, dark stoned fortress which has the rare ability to evoke an authentic medieval atmosphere. The views from the battlements are breathtaking looking out across mountains and sea.

The Castle walls guard against attack from the Estuary.

Conwy - ancient and modern.
From Conwy we went on to Llandudno to ride on the Great Orme Tramway.

Arriving in Llandudno

Riding the tramway up the Orme - a sequence of photos.
It is a funicular railway consisting of two tramcars which use a system of counterbalanced weights on cables so that as one train descends the hill, it helps to pull the other one up. The cable tramway is over 100 years old and is one of only a few still in operation in the world that today continues to take tourists up Great Orme. From the top there are spectacular views across the traditional Victorian seaside town of Llandudno with its sandy beaches and promenade.

The copper mine.
A half way station was added in 2001 where visitors can break their journey with a visit to the near by Bronze Age Copper Mine.
We finished our visit with a stroll along the promenade
