Wentworth Lunch (Wednesday)

The most popular event in our calendar - here for the twelfth time.
Please book now to help our forward planning.
We will gather in the Member's Lounge for pre-lunch drinks,
and to celebrate entering the twelfth year of the Associate Scheme.
This is a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and colleagues,
over a wonderful 3-course lunch with wine.
We will dine in the ballroom,
listen to the Chairman's report,
a couple of short talks by guests from the Company,
and there will be a slide show with music
of the activities of South East Associates over the past year.

24th January - Tuesday
Wood Street, near Worplesdon, Walk  
|
This is a lovely 5 mile walk with fine views of open country and through deciduous woods. It is over paths and fields with a few stiles, also undulating but there are no steep hills. It may be muddy so wear boots.
We'll see an "Olde Great Barn", a 13th century church and a WWII SOE base in Wanborough.
MEET: 10 for 10:15 am in Royal Oak, Wood Street, or church car park opposite. Postcode GU3 3DA.
LUNCH: At 1 pm this will be taken in a real ale pub with good food and plenty choice, the Royal Oak, 89 Oak Hill, Wood Street village GU3 3DA.

8th February - Wednesday
Museum of Brands & Portobello Road Market
 |

All will be revealed through household products and shopping basket favourites in a “time tunnel”. A nostalgic journey from Victorian times to today. See how well-known brands evolved through advertising and packaging, how we evolved with them, and then check them out later at Portobello Market.
MEET: 11.30 am at Colville Mews, Lonsdale Road, Notting Hill, W11 2AR, which is a short walk from Notting Hill Gate or Ladbrook Grove tube stations. From here we go to the museum.
LUNCH: 1.30 pm Walmer Castle pub, Ledbury Road, and afterwards Portobello Road Market.

22nd February - Wednesday
Colne Valley Walk 
 |
This is a 4½ mile flat circular walk with 3 stiles. We pass lakes, brooks, the River Thames with views of Runnymede and Coopers Hill, the ruins of a Benedictine Priory, and the 2,000 year old Ankerwycke Yew tree (above) where we should see snowdrops.
MEET: 10.15 for 10.30 start at Wraysbury Green car park near the Tennis Club, PostCode TW19 5NA.

Spring Pub Lunch

22nd March - Thursday
Selborne Walk & Gilbert White’s House

A walk of 3 miles on paths and quiet lanes, going through woods and over undulating ground but there are no stiles!.
Can be muddy if it has been wet.
A short, interesting walk around Selborne and up the hill.
The village is architecturally and historically fascinating and, although there is a fairly steep climb, the rewarding magnificent views make it worthwhile and it can be done at a leisurely pace.
Gilbert White’s house and garden (above) are worth visiting, including the Laurence Oates collection.

12th April - Thursday
Cookham Walk, Cliveden Orangery & Gardens 
|
A 5½ mile cross-country walk from Maidenhead to Cookham, and then back along the Thames with lunch at the Cliveden Orangery Restaurant (below).
Cliveden is an Italianate house and estate, home to Earls, Princes and Nancy Astor. The house is now an hotel but the estate, now run by the National Trust, features the largest parterre in Europe with outstanding topiary, a maze, a water garden with island pagoda, a lime tree avenue, and the largest sequoia in the UK.
In April, in addition to flowering cherry trees, wisterias and gunneras, there is a fabulous display of 20,000 tulips.
Also, the grounds feature a huge collection of follies and sculptures, and the famous Borghese Balustrade.

LUNCH: 1 pm Cliveden Orangery, Taplow, PostCode SL6 0JA, with self guided tour of gardens afterwards.

18th April - Wednesday
Arundel Castle & Wetlands
|
We take a guided tour of Castle - the medieval home of Duke of Norfolk - and view the renowned heraldry, furniture and paintings.
We follow this with a visit to The Wetland Centre nearby for a boat safari and boardwalks for exploration and sightseeing.
Both events are subsidised - almost half price for entry and guide fees.
Food is at your own cost.
MEET: Travel independently to arrive 10.30 am Mill Road car park - £3 for 4 hours - opposite castle entrance. We're here for four hours, which includes time for lunch.
At 2:30 we head to Wetlands - free parking here - for three hours with time for walking, taking a boat safari and tea.

Golf Tournament

Make a note in your diary that the
2012 SE UK Associate Golf Championship
will be held on Thursday 19th April at
Sand Martins Golf Club, Wokingham, Berkshire.
We'll play 18 holes of golf and follow this with a lunch.

Visit to Ironbridge World Heritage Site

An away break in the beautiful Ironbridge Gorge, the World Heritage site of the Industrial Revolution.
Group Guided tours will be available to the museums within the gorge.
We'll stay at the Best Western Valley Hotel in Ironbridge. The hotel has an award winning restaurant, and a choice of real ales in the bar!
There are many other attractions in the area if you choose to stay longer.
Those interested will be asked to commit by sending a £10 per person deposit to cover organisation costs.

September 17th to 21st, 2012 - Monday to Friday
Edinburgh Away Break

By train from London and four nights in Edinburgh at the Best Western City 3-star Hotel, about 10 minutes walk from the Royal Mile.
Attractions include The Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood House and the Royal Yacht Britannia. All of these, and any more, can be reached by open top bus on a combined 48-hour ticket.
Other attractions include a walk to Arthurs Seat, the Camera Obscura, Grassmarket and both Princes & George Streets for shopping!!!!
Letting “the train take the strain” we will travel to Edinburgh from Kings Cross, about 4½ hours.
Our return could be just after lunch on Friday 21st.
Volunteers will be needed to organise entertainment on the train!!!!
In excess of 10 people travelling will attract “group travel rates”, but feel free to make arrangements for an extended holiday.
Current prices for a 3-month advance rail booking are £26 return,
or £17 with a railcard.
An Edinburgh two-day open top bus and main attractions combined ticket currently costs £37.
